Albums of the 90s: On the best-selling records of the decade...
Содержание
The best-selling albums of the 90s are still at the peak of their popularity today! This is largely due to the fact that 90s music is essentially modern music... Everyone remembers it, knows it and loves it. And yes: most of the authors who gained popularity then have not lost their success in so many years! In this period in rock music appeared many new trends, for example - grunge. The brightest example of this style is Nirvana led by Kurt Cobain and their immortal hit "Smells Like Teen Spirit"! As for electronic music, the scene was led by such projects as The Prodigy. In short - when it comes to the 90s music scene, there really is a lot to remember... And today we're going to look back at the most commercially successful albums of this prolific decade (UK-wise)!
...But Seriously (1990)
"...But Seriously" is the interesting title of Phil Collins' fourth studio album. In fact, the record was released at the end of 1989: the material was written by Collins in the spring of that year. In this work, the musician raised quite important issues: socio-economic and political, as well as deep lyrical ones... And now, with the advent of the new decade, the album became a great success! And on both sides of the Atlantic! "...But Seriously" turned out to be the best-selling album of 1990: it sold about 7 million copies in the USA and UK! And the main single "Another Day in Paradise" brought the coveted Grammy to the author's piggy bank...
Unlike Collins' previous work, "...But Seriously" had a more serious nature and a more intense rock sound. The record was also influenced by styles such as R&B, dance-pop, jazz, soul and gospel.
Stars (1991 / 1992)
This remarkable work, which remained at the peak of commercial popularity for more than one year, belongs to the British jazz band Simply Red. Five singles were released from the album, two of which (the eponymous "Stars" and "For Your Babies") reached the British Top 10!
Stars has gone platinum as many as 12 times in its home country! It is the first album since Bridge over Troubled Water by Simon & Garfunkel (1970 / 1971) to remain a bestseller in the UK for 2 years! If official figures are to be believed, as of July 2016, Stars was in the top 15 best-selling albums in the history of this country...
Bat Out of Hell II: Back into Hell (1993).
Miet Loofe's record Bat Out of Hell II: Back into Hell was released in the autumn of 1993. It quickly reached the number one position in a number of countries: USA, UK, Australia... Among the most popular singles (5 of them were released in total) is the famous "I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)", the leader of 28 countries!
By the way: the third part of the Bat trilogy, Bat Out of Hell III: The Monster Is Loose, was released in 2006. The first part was released back in 1977. As for Bat Out of Hell II: Back into Hell, the album has sold over 14 million copies worldwide...
Cross Road (1994)
Cross Road is a legendary Bon Jovi album that includes the hits "Always" and "Someday I'm Be Saturday Night"! In addition, the album was supposed to include the song "Runaway", however, the track was never recorded... The best-selling single from the album was the first single: it was "Always" that helped the album to become the number one album in 13 countries, becoming an international hit!
Of note: pictured on the cover is the Roadside Diner, located in Wall Township, New Jersey. Cross Road has a total circulation of over 20 million copies...
Robson & Jerome (1995)
Robson & Jerome is the eponymous studio album by the British duo, whose sales in the UK surpassed 2 million copies in the shortest period of time (just over 40 days). Only in 2015, singer Adele managed to break the record with her "25": the record sold 2 million copies in less than a month! Robson & Jerome became a Christmas number one in its home country, with the top hits being a cover of "Unchained Melody" and "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted".
It seems strange, but despite its success Robson & Jerome was listed as one of the "50 Worst Albums of All Time" by Q Magazine!
Jagged Little Pill (1996)
Jagged Little Pill was the first international album for Canadian artist Alanis Morissette. The record was named after lines from the song "You Learn". To this day, Jagged Little Pill is considered Morissette's biggest breakthrough: the album, whose mood was markedly different from the singer's previous works, became the most commercially successful album of 1996! Among the hits: "Ironic", "Head over Feet" and "All I Really Want".

The album remained at the top of the Billboard chart for 12 weeks! As of 2009, it has sold over 30 million copies worldwide....
Be Here Now (1997)
And this is a legendary record by the equally legendary band Oasis! The album was recorded in several London studios, including the famous Abbey Road. As the band's producer, Owen Morris, later told us:
"The moment of recording Be Here Now was marred by conflicts within the band... The only thing that motivated them to pick themselves up and do it was money..."
Well: the album was a colossal success! The single "D'You Know What I Mean?" was a hit from the release. On the album cover we can see the members of Oasis at Stocks House (Hertfordshire).
Talk on Corners (1998)
This album by Irish The Corrs gave the world a great song "Only When I Sleep"... The single was a great success in a number of countries, including Japan, and therefore helped the album to reach the top of the charts!
Talk on Corners can be characterised as a pop-rock record, with elements of Celtic and traditional Irish music influences... The title of the release was inspired by the lyrics of the song "Queen of Hollywood".
Come on Over (1999)
This record-breaking album made the charming performer named Shanaya Twayne a true star of the late 90's! Come on Over went diamond 2 times in the US and Canada, while in Australia and the UK it was honoured with platinum status (15 and 10 times in each country)! Top singles include "Man! I Feel like a Woman!", "I'm Holdin' on to Love (to Save My Life)", "Love Gets Me Every Time", and other...
Come on Over is a true bestseller: it was the best-selling album recorded by a woman! In addition, it is the best-selling album in the history of country music and in the history of the late '90s! The record's circulation has long since passed 20 million copies....
