The new 2021 film The Exorcist's Apprentice (The Seventh Day) features a variety of different soundtracks and songs that immerse the viewer in the film's atmosphere. Christian faith and Catholicism, go hand in hand with horror. The creepy iconography of faith has always fuelled a genre that makes your blood run cold in your veins. Writer and director Justin P. Lange has studied his series of films like The Exorcist, The Omen and The Sixth Sense well to master the visual mechanics. Religious and supernatural films look scary yet appealing at the same time.

It all looks like a common list of recognisable images - a possessed child, priests and a Ouija board. The plot involves a rivalry between two priests. One a hardened exorcism worshipper, the other, a novice who is still learning. The new film has a hint of innovation, it's not about the devil, but about the figure who fights him. Guy Pearce, whose initiation took place back in 1985.

Father Peter was participating in an exorcism that day - and saw his mentor, Father Louis (played by the always appealing Keith David), get stabbed in the neck with a flying crucifix, whereupon Father Peter took possession of the exorcist. Pierce plays a new character: the exorcist as a hipster, walking around with a beard, smoking, driving a motorbike while singing along to rock. Demon possession is on the rise across the country, and despite the Vatican's increasingly disapproving stance against exorcism, someone has to deal with the mess.
