The story behind the song "One More Time" by French electronic duo Daft Punk (featuring Romanthony)
The track was authored by Daft Punk co-founder Tom Bangalter, his colleague Guy-Manuel de Omem-Christo, and successful American DJ Romanthony.
Daft Punk
The trio used a sample from Eddie Jones' "More Spell on You" to record the future hit. By the way: at first Bangalter resisted any borrowing... But his colleagues managed to persuade him! Eddie Jones was eventually confirmed as a co-writer.
The vocal part is a credit to Romanthony. According to Omem-Cristo, that's why he and Bangalter invited the DJ:
"...we decided that his funky voice would fit our funky music just right..."
It's worth admitting, the guys didn't mess up with this one!
The recording of "One More Time" and the studio environment
When processing the track, Daft Punk resorted to various musical filters and automatic vocal correction. This, in turn, led to a sea of unflattering criticism from connoisseurs of natural sound... But Bangalter has his own opinion about it:
"Many listeners and critics resent that we musicians use Auto-Tune... You know, it reminds me of the 1970s when they wanted to ban the synthesiser in France! It's a pity that people can't see the obvious: modern devices help familiar music to sound in a new way! Nobody is going to replace instruments that were invented before...".
"...nowadays we don't care much about what the critics will say about us... We used to be very worried about it... Yes, we might be disappointed with what they will say about this track. But... we, Romanthony, a lot of our fans like it! To criticise the vocoder... It's just an instrument! And yes, it makes it sound better!"
As for the vocal part of the mentioned Romanthony, according to Thomas the DJ was completely satisfied with his work:
"He treated his voice like an instrument! He had so many ideas... When recording, he was always coming up with something new and we loved it! Innovation was always Daft Punk's style..."
Achievements
The most curious thing is that the composition "One More Time" was recorded back in 1998! However, the release of the single was postponed to the autumn of 2000... As a result, the track topped the dance charts of several countries, completed the list of "500 greatest songs of all time" according to Rolling Stone and brought Daft Punk and Romanthony a surge of popularity!
Twelve years after its release, Mixmag readers voted "One More Time" the best dance hit of all time!
As for the music video, it is made in the style of a musical anime film. Daft Punk themselves described it as "a visual realisation of the Discovery album...".
Toma Bangalter:
"Some loved this track, some hated it... Either way, 'One More Time' didn't leave listeners indifferent!"
