Joji - Ew (2020)
Содержание
"Ew" is the first track of Joji's second studio album "Nectar". The song talks about Joji's past relationships and all his emotions summarised into one word.
Joji released his second studio album 'Nectar' on 25 September 2020. The original release date of the album was delayed in July 2020 due to Covid-19. This is his return to music after his 2018 album "BALLADS 1".
The song title "Ew" sounds like the Vietnamese word "Yeu," which means love. Or it just means his aversion to love with that sound... A reference to his past relationships.
Meaning and overview of the song "Ew"
First verse
In the only verse of the song, Joji talks about his experience of love. When love seems perfect, it completely changes a person's view of the world. Joji says it's the ability to believe in anything. But when things start to go downhill, the whole aura around them changes.
Joji seems to be in constant fear of the "end" of a relationship. This tells us what his experiences of love have been like. These experiences make him question what love is!
Joji has so many questions when it comes to love and relationships, but like for all of us, those answers blow in the wind.
Chorus
In the song's chorus, you can hear Joji wishing he knew how to love and how to let go. Of course, the latter is going to be pretty hard to do every time. And the more relationships you have, the more you start to question your self-esteem. What's at stake is to be appreciated, to be enough for the other, to be needed and loved. It can't be a pleasant feeling.
Joji laments that he is finally considering being alone for the rest of his life. Lava in the lyric video above sums up the singer's inner pain as he talks about his experiences in love.
