With its catchy synthesiser sound and explosive chorus, this song became one of the most memorable hits of the 80s! How was one of the most iconic songs in Corey Hart's career created, and what did the artist tell the journalists about it? Let's find out!
In the spring of 1983, 20-year-old Corey Hart was already a real "star kid"! The singer was recording in a studio near Manchester. By the end of May he already had a cassette with eleven gorgeous tracks to complete his debut First Offense! But: there was one more track that brought Hart unheard of fame.... The mysterious twelfth track was called "Sunglasses in the Night." Hart later recounted:
"The song hadn't been written yet, however it was already born in the subterranean subconscious of my creative subconscious... I remember it raining almost every day when I was in the UK for these sessions. I had a pair of Ray Ban sunglasses, but I never got the chance to use them!"
"A little later that summer, my album was delivered to Aquarius-Capitol Records. Everyone seemed very happy with the results. In those days I was overflowing with inspiration like never before! Even though the album was finished, the songs continued to develop vivid images in my head... For days on end, the line "my cigarette got wet" never left me. It's an ironic lyric because I've never smoked in my life! This line was the germ of 'sunglasses', although I didn't realise it for a long time..."
"I came back one evening completely wet! The phrase 'I wear my sunglasses at night' was going round and round in my head." "Wow!" - I thought. That same night, the song was born. I wanted to put it on the new album, but I was afraid it was impossible... At that point we had already spent the entire recording budget. But I decided that when I woke up in the morning I would call the label first thing in the morning and insist!"
Much to Hart's surprise, Aquarius Records sent him back to England!
"They trusted me when I said: "I think it's a really great hit!" And I was right! My producers in London, Phil Chapman and John Astley, recognised it as the most gorgeous song... They masterfully produced the track, emphasising the sounds of hip-hop music and other styles that were exploding the British music scene during this prolific period of the early 80s...."
"When the song was released in November 1983, I remember hearing it for the first time on CHOM-FM in Montreal! It took me 30 seconds to drown out the car speakers - turning the volume up to maximum just overloaded them!" - Cory recalled with a laugh!
In the summer of 1984, the song "Sunglasses At Night" was slowly but steadily climbing the Billboard charts. It was in the top ten when Corey visited the USA on his massive promotional tour!
Music video ...
The music video for "Sunglasses At Night" was directed by Rob Quartley, and won a Juno Award for Best Video for 1984! Corey Hart later shared with the press:
"I believe it was the video that helped me gain a strong image... Certainly the video had an impact on the success of the song itself! Music videos at the time were something new, exciting and innovative... After just a couple of weeks of MTV spinning your face, you'll notice the song gaining raving popularity from coast to coast!"
If you think Corey Hart is tired of this song, you are very deeply mistaken! In one of his recent interviews, the artiste revealed:
"Last week, I was on a crowded rental bus at the Miami airport to pick up our car. Then the song 'Sunglasses at Night' came on the radio like a hypnotic riff... Someone on the bus started tapping their feet to the rhythm of the music, who swayed to it... I looked at my daughter. We both had smiles on our faces. Yes, it still makes me very happy to hear that, even after all these years..."
