How did "Beatlemania" begin? All about the song "She Loves You"....
Содержание
It was this song that sparked the beginning of what would later be called "Beatlemania"! Released in 1963, "She Loves You" turned the Liverpool foursome of young musicians into a cult band of all time... It was also the first song to feature the legendary "yeah, yeah, yeah", which led to the band's nickname in some European countries: The Yeah-Yeahs!
The great and terrible Ozzy Osbourne once declared:
"When I heard that song I just flew away! It's an incredible thing that turns the world upside down... At that moment I only dreamed of one thing: that McCartney would marry my sister!"
Interesting thing: probably everyone knows this song, but only a few know the story of its creation. And if suddenly you don't know how The Beatles' cult hit was created, we offer to correct it!
"She Loves You" - where did it all start?
The lyrics were written by McCartney and Lennon in the summer of 1963, in a hotel in Newcastle, where the band was staying after a concert. According to Paul, the inspiration came from Bobby Rydell's hit song, which was popular at the time:
"After listening to Bobby Rydell's "Forget Him" I got the idea to write a "response song"! One of us would sing, 'I love you' and the other would respond with, 'Yes, yes, yes, yes'... We both decided that the song idea was cheesy... But at least it was already there! So we spent about two hours in the hotel to realise it!"
The final "polishing" of the text took place at the home of Paul's parents. Here is what journalists managed to find out about this process:
"We were sitting at my parents' house working on what ended up being our big hit! I remember my dad watching TV and sipping Players while we finished 'She Loves You'. When we finished the piece, we offered to let him rate it. John and I went out into the living room and played Dad our song! Then we said, "What do you think? What do you think?" And he said: "It's not bad, son. But there's so many of these Americanisms now... Why don't you sing, 'She loves you. Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes!" Yeah, that was a typical situation with my father..."
And here's how Lennon himself commented on the song:
"To be honest - I don't really remember where that 'yeah, yeah, yeah' came from... I do, however, remember a song by Elvis called 'All Shook Up' well: listening to it, I realised that it was the first time I'd ever heard 'uh huh', 'oh yeah' and 'yeah, yeah' being played in the same recording...".
How did the recording go?
The track was recorded in one of the studios on the legendary Abbey Road. Later on, the sound engineer Norman Smith recalled how at first he didn't like the song:
"When I saw the lyrics, I thought, 'God, what a set of words!' But when they started singing... It was magical! I even started dancing involuntarily..."
Curious story... After the track's release, radio presenter Brian Matthew was not lazy and wrote a review of "She Loves You". Matthew called the song "banal rubbish", which slightly puzzled the Beatles:
Paul McCartney: "We'd never come across the word 'corny' before. So we thought, 'corny? What does that mean? Too wussy? Too rebellious? What does that word mean?""
The best part of the whole story is that a week later, when the song was topping the chart, Brian Matthew retracted his comments, stating, "I may have found 'She Loves You' corny at first, but... I'm starting to like it more and more every day!".
