"The Sounds of Mu. - a musical group that can rightfully be called a true phenomenon of the Russian rock scene. Everything in the history and work of this band is unusual: from the content of the songs to the original sound and the leader himself. Petra Mamonova. The composition often changed and even broke up twice. At some point, it seemed that the group returned to the fans. But it only seemed ... So who were the "Sounds of Mu" in fact and how did they arise "Echoes of Mu"?

History of appearance

"The Sounds of Mu. - the same group that was not to everyone's liking, but without it it is impossible to imagine Russian rock.

This phenomenon arose in the mid-80s, at the whim of two brilliant musicians - Petra Mamonova and Alexander Lipnitsky. As a result, their offspring became the most unusual thing that happened in music. the USSR.

Peter Mamonov was the driving force behind this rock show. He was interested in music since childhood and at school he even founded the Express group with friends. There he mastered drums, bass guitar and keyboards. However, a new page called “Sounds of Mu” appeared in his biography when the musician was already over 30. There were two “old men” in the group - Peter Mamonov and Alexander Lipnitsky. They called themselves:

“We were 30 years old! Great life experience behind him, a different perception of the world than that of young musicians ... All this was strange, at least for relatives and others. Two old men decided to form a rock band! Starting a career as a rock star in the USSR at that age seemed like a hopeless undertaking, ”Lipnitsky said in an interview.

Peter and Alexander were childhood friends. The third in their company was Artemy Troitsky, who advised his comrades to think about their own group. At that time, Mamonov had a solid song repertoire in reserve. But not everyone saw his phenomenon.

“I turned down the first offer to form my own rock band. But in 1983, Peter again approached me with this idea. In general, he had quite original pieces in reserve, and not everyone understood them: when he sang about his "Lyulyaki Bab" and "Diatezy" in the circle of close and familiar musicians, everyone just laughed. But he had a great rhythm, and suddenly I realized that this should be taken seriously. People need these songs!” - Lipnitsky emphasized in his interview.

History of the mysterious name

Over the years, there has been a ton of speculation by fans as to where the band's name actually came from. According to the journalist Sergei Guriev, this phrase has already been encountered earlier in Mamonov's songs and, most likely, determined the birth of experimental creativity: something between the sounds of music and lowing. But there is a more curious version Olga Gorokhova, a close friend of Mamonov:

“I called Petya the Ant, and he called me the Fly. Later, we both shortened our nicknames to just Mu. When he and Alexei, Mamonov's brother, thought about the name of the group, Peter abruptly stood up and said: “Sounds of Mu!” That's what we decided on."

The debut performance took place January 28, 1984 at the school where Mamonov and Lipnitsky once studied. In 1986, the group first appeared on television, namely, they took part in the filming of a documentary "One has only to pull the bowstring ..."where she sang the song "The Mummy.". In the same period, Mamonov gives apartment concertswith which to hone their skills.

1987 was a busy year for Mamonov and his team: first official concert outside of Moscow, filming a 60-minute musical film "Tell Tchaikovsky the news", international tours and festivals. Against the backdrop of popularity "The Sounds of Mu. began to be invited more often to television and radio broadcasts, and their songs, such as "Leisure-boogie." and "Grey Pigeon."become hits.

In the second half of the 80s, interest in the person of Mamonov increased: the musician is increasingly giving interviews, and fans call him "father". Already in 1988, Pyotr Nikolaevich made his film debut - in the film "Needle" with Viktor Tsoi starring.

Soon with the help Vasily Shumov, leader "Center", the debut double magnetic album was recorded "Simple things". He was followed "Crimea" and "Transreliability"and they were all wonderful!

Who inspired "The Sounds of Mu.because their work is unique and peculiar? According to Lipnitsky, all members of the group were music lovers, but jazz, music Elvis Presley, Chubby Checker, Ray Charles and The Beatles. The cult virtuoso also had his influence on Alexander Davidovich Jimi Hendrix.

“Basically, rock is played in adolescence, when there is a desire to imitate someone. We were over 30, and we did not want to copy anyone. We pursued completely different goals, we had completely different experiences and views on life ... Our rehearsals served as confirmation of this: sometimes Pavlov and Khotin tried to “spice up” songs with fashionable musical elements, and this is not surprising, because they were younger than us. But Peter immediately cut off all these experiments. That's why 'Sounds of Mu' had such an original and pure sound based purely on rhythm!" Lipnitsky recalled.

The phenomenon of Peter Mamonov

When it comes to "Sounds of Mu", first of all, the leader of the group comes to mind, Peter Mamonov. This man was truly phenomenal and unique. Because of this, sometimes the rest of the team looked like an addition against his background. About it Alexander Lipnitsky said like this:

“Yes, Peter really was the driving force in the group. But the rest of the participants were not background. And life has proven it. After "Sounds of Mu" Petya never managed to create anything like what we did together ... It was special magic!

The End of History and "Echoes of Mu"

The first breakup of the group took place in 1989 year when "The Sounds of Mu. were at the peak of their popularity throughout the USSR. Suddenly, Mamonov announced the dissolution of the musicians, which surprised and at the same time upset everyone. After that, he nevertheless made an attempt to revive his offspring, but to no avail: largely due to the fact that the composition was no longer the same. Pyotr Nikolaevich almost stopped the activities of the team. Nevertheless, for a long time he still performed and even published music under the name of the group, albeit almost completely alone.

"Echoes of Mu"

"Echoes of Mu" - this is the name of the project, in which the former members of the original composition periodically performed. Unfortunately, Pyotr Mamonov never appeared in the group.

However, after leaving Alexey Bortnichuk in 2012 and death Alexander Lipnitsky in 2021, the continued existence of the project is in doubt.

Echoes of Mu is a truly unique experience! It is unlikely that in world rock there will be another example of how a group without a leader was reborn in such an unusual way, ”Lipnitsky once said.
