Lady Gaga sang the US national anthem at Joe Biden's inauguration, and it was both respectful and very much an icon of epatage... Dressed in a tight black long-sleeved shirt adorned with a gold dove brooch and a fluttering bright red dress, Gaga sang into a gold microphone. Reaching incredibly high notes, she sang with proper, Streisand-style pronunciation, which nevertheless contained many of her personal, signature touches... She proudly raised her left fist, and gestured expressively with her right hand throughout the song! And, as is often the case with her after performances, she cried quietly after she finished.....
The national anthem, it's worth noting, isn't Lady Gaga's only such an important and meaningful performance: the singer also earned praise for her performance at the opening of Super Bowl 50 in 2016.
And now she has a history with President-elect Biden under her belt... When Biden's victory was clear, Gaga wrote on her Twitter:
"Joe Biden, Kamala Harris and the American people! You have just given the world one of the greatest displays of kindness and bravery that mankind has ever seen... Endless respect for our new commander in chief and the first woman to serve as the nation's Vice President in U.S. history!"
Gaga and Biden's relationship
On the eve of the election, 2 November 2020, Lady Gaga appeared at a rally in Pittsburgh where she openly stated: "Vote for Joe. He's a good man." Addressing the men, she also called incumbent Republican opponent Donald Trump "a man who thinks his fame gives him the right to grab one of your daughters or sisters or mothers or wives by any body part."
It's worth noting that back in October 2017, Biden and Lady Gaga teamed up to record a video message on behalf of Itsonus.org! At the time, Gaga tweeted a video message from herself and Biden, who she referred to as a "mate." Biden also tweeted a message, saying: "I am honoured to work with a very brave woman, my friend Lady Gaga. With her leadership and your help, we can change the culture!"
And lo and behold, their tandem repeated in 2020! How did it happen? Let's find out!
What it was like...
Wednesday marked a day of transition for America as outgoing President Donald Trump left the White House for the last time and new President Joe Biden prepared to move into the residence and take the reins of power. But before the 46th President of the United States was sworn in, a musical icon took to the stage to set the tone for the momentous occasion. Lady Gaga opened Biden's inauguration with a moving rendition of the national anthem. Watch Lady Gaga's unforgettable rendition of the national anthem at the inauguration. The epathetic pop star sang "The Star-Spangled Banner" moments before the 46th President of the United States took the oath of office....
Lady Gaga arrived to perform the anthem at the inauguration of US President-elect Joe Biden in a traditionally flamboyant outfit... Dressed in an unconventional Schiaparelli couture ensemble with a large golden dove of peace emblazoned on the front by designer Daniel Roseberry, the pop star performed a stunning version of 'The Star-Spangled Banner'. To an unusually smaller than usual crowd gathered outside the Capitol, and to millions of listeners from around the world... During the interview, Daniel Roseberry said:
"As an American living in Paris, this ensemble is a love letter to a country I miss so much and to a performer whose artistry I have admired for so long..."
The star herself, Lady Gaga shared the message with her Twitter followers just hours after the performance. The singer explained the meaning of the golden dove that dignified her outfit:
"The dove carrying an olive branch symbolises world peace... May we all make peace with each other!" - the singer wrote.
Shortly before hitting the Inauguration Day spotlight, 11-time Grammy Award winner Lady Gaga tweeted:
"Singing our national anthem for the American people is my honour. I will sing at the moment of the change of power... It has great meaning to me!"
And just a day before the show, while visiting the U.S. Capitol for rehearsals, the singer made another message to her fans and followers on social media:
"I pray that tomorrow will be a day of peace for all the people of America... A day of love, not hate. A day of acceptance, not fear. A day to dream the joys of our country! A day to dream dreams that are not violent, dreams that keep our souls safe..."
It's worth noting that in January 2017, at Trump and Pence's inauguration, the U.S. anthem was performed by "America's Got Talent" finalist Jackie Ivanko.
Conclusion
Gaga has been a Biden supporter and backed the former vice president throughout his 2020 campaign... So for her to perform "The Star-Spangled Banner" was another show of support, and another demonstration of her ability to sing this deliberately difficult tune....
Lady Gaga first performed the national anthem in front of an audience of millions of TV viewers at the Super Bowl in 2016. As for Joe Biden's inauguration ceremony, Gaga was only the first of America's featured talent. Jennifer Lopez, who is also a veteran of the Super Bowl stage, is scheduled to perform, as well as Justin Timberlake and Jon Bon Jovi in the 90-minute television programme Celebrating America, hosted by Tom Hanks.
